Candle molds-choosing to make or to purchase.

Candle molds are used with paraffin wax, bees wax and soy wax to shape your votive or pillar candles. Molds can be purchased on line or at your favorite craft store or made from everyday household items. Candlemaking molds found in craft stores or on line are made for candlemaking and will withstand a high temperature. When choosing to make a candlemaking mold from household items you will need them to have the following characteristics: Be able to withstand the pouring temperature of the wax. A smooth finish inside without crevices, crevices would prevent the candle from sliding out of the mold (a soup can will not work). Unless the mold can be cut or torn away then this doesn't apply. The mold should also be wider at the opening than at the base so the candle will slide out of the mold. Again if cutting or tearing the mold away, this won't apply. Another fun mold could be made from damp sand.

Selecting votive or pillar molds can be fun especially when using household items. Items such as pill bottles, small yogurt containers, Dixie cups, film containers, shot glasses and even trial size plastic bottles are great for votives. Pillar candles could be made from potato chips cans, juice crystal cans, frozen juice containers, dairy cartons and containers and even shampoo bottles. A homemade professional pillar or votive mold can be made from PVC pipe, available at hardware stores. Have the pipe cut into the desired length and use a PVC pipe cap as the mold base. This mold will work as well as a professional mold at a fraction of the cost. Floater candles can be made from egg poacher cups, aluminum or metal tart shells, decorative muffin tins, and even larger chocolate molds. Smaller chocolate molds can be used for wax embeds for gel candles. Corrugated cardboard is another household mold that will give you textured pillars or votives.

Whether choosing to purchase a professional candle mold from a craft store or on line or making a candle mold from a household item, you will get unique pillars or votive candle made by you and have lots of fun doing candlemaking projects.
